I just heard that Robin Williams apparently committed suicide and it’s pretty upsetting. I was a huge Robin Williams fan as a kid I don’t think any comedian has ever made me tear up in movies. Dead Poets Society killed me and even hacky movies like Patch Adams and Jack were pretty effecting somehow. Later in life I loved his dark stuff like Death To Smoochy, Insomnia and Bobcat Goldthwait’s underrated Worlds Greatest Dad.
I got a chance to meet him at NYU’s Tisch Gala and he was the nicest guy, gladly posing for photos and going back stage to talk to the students who were about to perform.
It also hurts because I lost a friend to suicide after a long battle with alcoholism and I know Williams battled with that for years. His infamous Maron WTF Podcast was an amazing look into that and I just listened to the whole thing a couple weeks ago.
Anyway, this is long and overly sentimental, but as far as celebrity deaths go, this one hurts more than most. RIP Robin Wiliams.
